The 4 F’s

What are the four F’s? Well they are family, friends, fish, and food. You put all of that together on the ice, and you have a great time!

So, my friends, family and I were at the 2019 Maple Lake ice fishing derby in Maple Lake, MN last weekend. It started out with a few friends and I getting on the lake around 6:30 A.M. just so we could get a decent spot. The fishing contest starts at 12 and ends at 3. We got our spot and mapped out where we would be drilling the 30+ holes. We drilled a few holes, talk a bit, then drill more holes.

As the morning went on, more and more people showed up onto the ice, not to mention the 100’s of others already I their wheeler ice houses. Some more friends and family were showing up and one of them started the Weber grill to put the chicken wings with a dry rub on them. Then, my dad showed up with the fryer! We fried a little bit of everything Pike, Crappie, Bullhead, and for the first time Salmon. All of it was fantastic and like we always say, “if you go home hungry, you don’t like food.”

The Tournament started at 12. We started baiting the Hooks with Suckers and Shiners bought at Runnings of Monticello, MN the night before. At the sound of a bang, all lines god down (including the 30 in our group).

After a bit of waiting, we ended up catching a 3.6 lb Largemouth bass and an almost 2 lb. Pike. Each were registered but didn’t cut it for winning anything. Still loads of fun though!

So if you are looking for a fun day on the ice and want to participate in a great Tournament make sure to check out the link! And if you’re not sure where to go or what to use, leave a comment and I’ll be happy to give you information!

Ice Fishing the Cabin

So, last weekend was the “kick off” for my ice season. My wife, a family friend and I went up to the cabin to fish. It is up by Fergus Falls, MN, one of my homes away from home. We went to catch Crappie but caught a few bonuses and made memories.

I had been on the ice before last weekend, but only for a few hours. The first time was for Thanksgiving weekend and the second was in Menomonie, WI. Both produced fish, though, that is for another story.

It was Saturday morning. I had woken up at 7am with the excitement for Paul to come pick my wife and I up. See Paul had just gotten a new Dodge Ram and we got to go up in that. It was very comfortable as we made our way up, telling all the fishing stories we had all had years past.

We got up to the cabin at about 1030-11 AM. We unpacked all the things not needed for fishing and turned the heat on in the cabin. After getting a few things situated we were off to fish!

One of the neighbors was kind enough to plow a road out to the “Crappie” spot. So we took that out, though it was still to early for Crappies. We decided to fish in the bay in front of our cabin. We set up four Beaver Dam and 2 Frabill tip ups. We were going to give it until 230 and then go head to the Crappie spot. At about 130 we all started to get hungry, so we started to make sandwiches. Now keep in mind we have not had a flag go up yet. Then it happened as we were all huddled by the tail gate of the truck. “Tip up UP!!!” I yell, and start to run ( it just happened to be my Tip up.) I get to it, lift it up slow, and set the hook. I feel the tug and know the fish is on. It fights for a bit and I get it out of the hole. It’s a Large mouth bass. First fish of the day, and we haven’t even finished lunch yet!

After that we have a few more flags go up, but miss the fish. It becomes 230 and we pack up and go to the evening bite spot.

We drop all the gear off and my wife and Paul bring the dogs back to the cabin. As they do that, I stay and set up. I use my Auger and drill three holes for where the Ice house will sit, and one out side for a Tip up to be placed. I rig the Tip up with a BlueTipz transducer.

My wife and Paul get back just as I am finishing up and we start the fishing (again). With the heater going and the hum of 2 Flashers going, the Alarm goes off for the Tip up. I run out, set the hook and pull up a nice 20″ Pike. I end up bringing the whole rig back so I can concentrate on the Crappie bite.

For the next 2 hours it was non stop fish. Sizes any where from 9″-14″. We ended up with a Three person limit and released a bunch back.

The success to our fishing was planing and equipment that we used. We all used a 13 fishing rod and reel combo. The rest:

  • After our fun catching, we went back to the cabin. We filleted all our fish and divided them into ziplocks. As we finished cleaning we popped some Frozen pizzas in the oven and had a happy hour. Some of the neighbors came over and we all talked and laughed at the night of fishing we just had. It is, and always be, the place for some of the greatest memories.
  • Stories, friends and family

It was a fun filled weekend of fishing. One where you do some new fishing. A lot of stories, new and old. And a multi species kind of trip. When all that adds up, it makes for a great weekend!

My wife, Dad and I went to the cabin. Now, this is one of the first times outside of duck hunting that my mom has not been with. She stayed home sick. Not to big of a deal, so we fished Saturday morning. It started pretty slow in some of our spots. I was using a Storm floating crank bait. I used this because of the weeds being so high this time of year. First cast in great grandpa’s spot, he called “the rose bed”, two twitches and boom I had a pike on. After netting and measuring at 24 inches and had a thick girth. It was a nice pike!

After that pike and my wife’s nice little eater bass and a couple of sunnies, we heard back to the cabin. As we were sitting on the porch I was looking through Facebook and saw that a friend was out fishing with her son. The night before she had asked for help to find a new lake close by that had a public dock. They ended up at Pleasant Lake out in Annandale, MN. The picture I saw was her son, who is 6, holding up a beast of a pike! 29 inches and the head looked like an alligator. For anyone this is a nice sized fish, but for that kid, it’s a lifetime memory with great bragging rights. I congratulated him and showed the picture of my smaller pike and said “well he beat mine!” And I’m sure he is hooked for life!

Talking about all the fish stories as the sun was getting lower, we decided to get back on the pontoon. We originally were going over to a lake neighbors to chat, but they were just heading out on a cruise. So we agreed to troll for the rest of the night. This is something we rarely do. We headed to the north side of the lake. As we started, we were catching most of the bottom. The boat was not hooked up to a fish locator so we were just using memory to fish. Then, like a light bulb, I remembered we could use my Navionics App. This was the first time I had used it on a boat. It showed us the ridge line at about 20 ft. We stayed at that and ended up catching a few bass, crappie, and sunnies. As the light started to fall and we hit the area we wanted to, we moved to the south end. Using the App we trolled in the same depth. As we were making our final pass my dad hooks into a fish at the same moment I hook the bottom, I was getting pretty good at that. He starts to reel in as I ask ” do ya got something on?” He says “I’m not sure, it feels like weeds.” I get my mess of weeds back to the boat and look over at his pole, “nope that’s a fish, look at the head shakes it making your pole bounce.” We laugh and my wife is sitting ready with the net. As the fish gets close enough to see, I get excited and yell, “it’s a walleye!” Our net lady scoops it up and we cheer and high five. All of that happened because we had the map and stayed on the ridge.

At the end of the day, we sat proud and talked about the fishing. Dad’s head held high, my wife happy to get out fishing, and me just as excited as a 6 year old with the biggest fish of us life so far. I stop to think about it and between the three of us, we had managed to catch every game species on our lake; walleye, large mouth bass, crappie, sunnies, rock bass, perch, and of coarse a pike. It was such a fun weekend full of stories and new ones had been made. So remember to get out there and just fish. You never know what you can catch!

    Fishing Trip Excitment

A few months ago my family and I booked our second salmon fishing trip. We were at the Northwest Sports Show where we found Princess Marissa Charters who  we went with last year. It was so much fun! Now that we know when we are going and we only have three weeks left, planing for the trip can really begin.

First off, when we were there last year, it was the first time I had gone salmon fishing on Lake Michigan. I remember seeing people fishing from the shore. My goal this year is to catch something from shore when I am not on the boat. I have asked for some advice from some of the people on Lake Michigan Salmon and Trout Fishing FaceBook page and they were all so helpful. Now it’s just a matter of getting some lures and getting my rod and reel ready.

Second, you want to make sure to pack the right clothing. Of course you have to have the essentials. But a few things I have to remember to grab is rain gear, some water proof boots, extra socks, and a sweater or two. I can not express the sweater or jacket enough, even if it is going to be a nice warm day, the mornings and nights on Lake Michigan can get pretty cool, even in August. I also always have to have a ball cap, I always have one on but I need to have one fishing. It helps with blocking the sun with my polarized sunglasses so I can see through the glare of the water.

Now, the charter we are using has us set up with lodging, but after our trip in Port Washington, WI, my wife and I accompanied by my in-laws will be going to Door County, WI to do some sight seeing and I will try to do some shore fishing there. But we had to find some lodging in a new place. Lodging is very important to stay comfortable and can make your fishing trip that much more enjoyable.

This trip is going to be a lot of fun, I will be going with a charter that I believe in and will get me on fish. I than get to try my own hand on catching a salmon or trout from shore. I will be with family and teasing friends. I will be comfortable and most of all I know I will have fun!

    Fishing during the 4th

I have talked about fishing with family before, I’m going to go ahead and do it again! This year for the 4th of July my nephews were able to come up from Iowa. We got to the cabin on Friday the 6th, unpacked and headed out on the pontoon.

The boys (2 and 6) have been excited all week for this moment. All week they would say “catch fish with uncle Jimbo!” A worm fashioned to a Straight shaft hook and a Bobber we were ready to fish.

I’ll tell ya one thing, if you want to learn patience, take some younger kids fishing. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a blast to see them catch fish after fish and be excited every time, but man the attention span… it just makes you chuckle. We made a rule for this trip, they had to give every fish a kiss before releasing the Sunnies. They giggled and did a good job! An uncle couldn’t be any happier.

As the sun started to disappear and the skeeters swarmed out, I tell the boys I’m going to cast a couple before we go in. I through my Lure out off the edge of the point. One jerk, nothing. Second jerk, nothing. On the third I was hooked on! Reeling in I can hear the boys cheering in excitement as my dad gets the net ready. He missed 3 times and finally, I get to see the fight at the end of my line. A nice large mouth bass! I held it for a picture, gave it a kiss, and released it to catch another day.

It’s dark now and we race the skeeters back to the cabin. Back to celebrate a good outing and story telling. Remember to always take a kid fishing.
